In America, passenger elevators are required to conform to the ASME A 17.1 (American Society of Mechanical Engineer's Standard A17.1 Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators). In Canada the document is the CAN/CSA B44 Safety Standard which in the 2000 edition was harmonized with the US version. In some local jurisdictions existing passenger elevators may be required to conform to A17.3. Testing of passenger elevators is per the ASME A17.2 Standard. Passenger elevators also must comply with the National Fire Protection Association standards, local building codes and the ADA.<br /><br />Residential elevators should conform to ASME A17.1.<br /><br /></p>
